I have given some serious thought to getting divorced, not because I don't love my wife, but because I no longer think the State or the Church should be sanctioning personal relations. But the traditional benefits accorded to married people in our society, have hindered my principled divorce

GW (?) created a federal rule that common law spouses could not qualify for federal pension survival benefits anymore. She has no pension. What choice did they have?
