Sure, pictures would help. I just hope there's no damage to the crankshaft or balancer. What is this $167 tool you're talking about? The crankshaft should just bolt back in with a large deep socket. While it's out, I'd change the front seal. The hard part is holding back the engine while tightening. I believe there's someplace down by the balancer that a tool can be wedged according to the maintenance manual. If unsure, I would just get the woodruff key from the dealer.
