I wouldn't criticize the IDI system. MB was the first to make a diesel passenger car and no one has more experience with diesels, or cars for that matter, than MB, though VW has a long history of diesels too. The IDI system of its time had some significant advantages over the DI system, namely quieter operation and higher maximum engine speed. It wasn't until a few years ago that engineers were able to make DI engines quiet enough and with a decent redline. As far as American diesels, other than perhaps the Cummins and Duramax they are a joke, particularly GM's attempts at passenger car diesels in the 70's.
