For diesel's that see cold weather I believe you need both high CCA's and a large reserve capacity. As mentioned above if the high current carrying cable of the battery is under-sized you are not going to make full use of whatever battery you have. Even if the under-sized cable does not melt, it will get hotter resulting in higher resistance and lower current flow. Too few CCA's and the engine doesn't spin fast for easy starts.
