For a long time the media reported the diesel engine as being supplied for Mercedes while the product was still in pre-production stage. In the end, there was no Mercedes CDI diesel engine that met the power, cost and availability requirements that Jeep wanted, so the engine was sourced from VM Motori which coincidentally was once a Daimler-Benz Unit.
