You use a quick detail spray to wet the surface of the paint, and then rub the clay back and forth using light pressure. It will pick up contaminants in your paint. The clay bar will get dirtier and dirtier as you move along. It will leave the surface of your paint incredibly smooth.

All detailing clay bars come with the detail spray.

In fact, Meguiars sells a clay bar with their quick detail spray, but it's not very good. Stick with Clay Magic or Mothers.
