What do you consider "A lot of play"?

The manual states 24 or 25mm which is just shy of 1 inch.

You said "Nearly 100% of the front end rebuilt". Can you list the parts that were replaced?

You need to make sure everything is in good condition and an alignment is done berore even thinking of adjusting the steering box let alone replacing it.
