He may be starting on the cheap stuff - probably is. I say go for it - with the spray gun. A good paint store can help a lot. It'll be fun as long as you don't kill yourself. I would stick with air dryed enamel for a first job - with a good mask. Catalyzed urethane without the proper equipment can kill.
