I was afraid of having to cut the regulator (nasty springs, what?). I'm assuming it's stuck, and the car has 216,000 miles on it, so I may replace it anyway.

I will try the hammer trick this weekend -- I need to put a new door check in anyway (second one since I got the car, new one failed in four years).
