I really like Clarion - I installed a Clarion HU in my last car and was very happy with it. I didn't consider it for this car due to cost - adding in the Satellite tuner, etc really ramped it up quickly. Also, the majority of my driving is highway, and the very fine details will be lost due to wind/tire noise.
I decided to try Pioneer Premier due to reputation. They seem to have hit on a good combination of quality, price, features, and durability. Alpine has always been good, but I just didn't like the HU for some reason - the green was too bright or something. The Pioneer is pretty understated which fits in my car nicely!
Side note, I was at the dealer (I still let them service it for me - they've always done a good job). When I came in to pick it up, they told me that all the mechanics were climbing in to have a listen - they couldn't believe the sound coming out of a 95 E class!
