Standard paintwork wasn't clear coated and metallic was.

The 85 mercedes book says there are 9 total layers:

Zinch Phosphating and Precleaning
Cathodic Electro-Coated Primer
Undercoating (bottom)
Gravel Protection (bottom)
Second Primer
First Color coat (synthetic resin color base)
Second Color Coat (synthetic resin sprayed and baked to a hard lustre
*Lacquer Coat on metallic-finish cars
Anticorrosion Wax Protection (bottom, engine, hollow body spaces and other pieces exposed to corrosive influences)
