Thats why a very weak solution, over a longer time will reduce the amount of corrosion but also kill the bad guys. It never hurts to flush with distilled water (in a similar way to the bleach/water application) after the bleach has had time to get the job done. Either way be careful, bleach is a common cleaner but still dangerous.
