I agree with Jim....just lube all the ball connectors and roller and inspect the cable sheath for any breaks or kinks..... drizzle some WD40 or light oil down the cable end into the sheath.
Have I had a problem like this..ya on everything from the garden tractor to 84 & 87 MB, DS21 Pallas Citroen, Porsches, Maserati BiTurbo....it does not matter....when the cable wears out and freys or the linkage or cable is not lubricated periodically it will stick sooner or later.
Just try lubricating it. If it works for a short time and the problem returns then its time to replace parts.
