If its soundstage you're after, I seriously suggest attacking the front speakers. You'll never get good soundstage/detail out of rear speakers as your ears were never deisgned that way. Perhaps a decent set of component speakers up front might be the best option, although not as easy as the rear speakers.

Although tone controls are generally detrimental to the sound, you might find that tweaking them may give a crisper note to instruments.. a bit more treble perhaps.
