My 1984 300TD exhibits the same behavior.. I just chalked it up to cold oil/loose cold engine being harder to push... was thinking about hijacking a throttle cable off a lawnmower or some other similar device and building a high-idle/cheap cruise-control-fix device... kind of like the "cruise" my dad had on his old FJ diesel landcruiser.. he never shoulda sold that thing
