Question Is there a rev limiter @ 4000rpm for the W124 M104 engine?

This afternoon I was slowly revving up my engine to see if there was anything amiss with the ignition, timing, etc. The gauge is clearly marked with a redline zone starting at about 6900 rpm, but right when I got the engine up to 4000 rpm, it started to stumble. It was not so much a stumble, as a deliberate shutting down of cylinders to prevent revving beyond that point.

Am I correct in determining that the factory has a rev limiter built in at this point, or do I have a problem that needs further investigation?

I don't drive the car hard, so it really never gets past 3500 rpm.
