Well I had some messing around until I realized that the retaining ring had to slide back over the grey plastic shroud around the headlight. Once that was done then I simply found that some of the screws would hold and some would not!

I measured the lights because I had exactly the same thought as you - are these new ones thicker - answer is no!

It's also a great time to clean off all the goop on the hood latches. It opens much more easily now!!
