To JOHNSC16V, to answer your question, No that is not me.

A dirty fuel sender was my problem. The guage did its dance routine at about 1/3 full to 1/8 full. Never if there was more than a 1/3 of a tank of gas. Happened every time, without fail. And only when the fuel was sloshing around inside the tank. Sitting still - no problem.

However, I too have experienced bad connections on the printed circuit boards inside the instrument cluster. So it is very likely that your problem could be there. My solder problem was related to the instrument lights.
I got too many cars!! Insurance eats me alive. Dave
