Oil vapor collector/intake/valve cover discussion

Dear Forum,

What is the point of the air intake being connected to the oil vapor trap?

It makes an oily mess and coat all the intake's inside (outside also) of a crumy crud (only worsened by the fact that the EGR valve also releases soot in the intake).

I guess the designers of the cars wanted the intake to be coated in oil to trap the soots coming from the exhaust. But is there another function to the valve cover plumbing going into the intake than that?

Could the oil vapors be just collected in the trap and channeled to the crankcase(after ablation of the EGR!)?
