MY 01 wagon came with two "Smart Keys" (oblong, with a panic button and two, yours has three buttons) there is also a metallic key in that remote, that is removeable for manual unlock of door or trunk. The emergency key is very similar has no buttons, does not unlock unless manual counts, is approximately 1/8 in thick and also has a metal key. The remote lock and unlock is powered via infra red, with the batteries in the remote, and the electronic key, both standard and emergency, are powered by "inductive energy" from the key collar on the car over a redundant data bus.
There are only 24 keys available for any car, additional or replacement, MB keeps the data base, a replacement wipes that key forever, an additional adds one. If you exceed the count it is a complicated and expensive to replace the effected DAS "boards" and keys. Forget E bay!
