I am about to purchase a '72 280SEL 4.5 in the LA area. The car has 260K miles toatl, and had an extensive overhaul (new pistions etc) at 110K. This puts 150K on the motor and has not had any timing chain work done to it at all.

I believe that this exceeds the recommended maintenance and should probably be replaced prior to driving the car all the way back to Atlanta Georgia. Is this true? Is it possibly to do a visual on the chain for stretch/slop, worn guides and if OK do the work myself back home?

I do not want to play Russian Roulette with this, but if I can make an educated decision, I would prefer to get it home and do it here.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanx,
