In the 50's or 60's Italian cars were know to foul plugs at low RPM. So to "tune it up" you were to drive at high RPM to burn up, blow out the carbon build up as long for as it takes to smooth out idle. Sounds like as good an excuse to have fun driving as any. Don't know how effective on a diesel. Albeit a friend does that occasionally, he rarely gets over 35 MPH, or more than a few miles anywhere, as he walks to work. He also uses no name fuel. I have a 35 mile one way commute 90% of which is interstate, and use 45 cetane, brand name diesel, and a shot of PowerService, I feel there is a difference. I also do the purge thing. Hope this helps.
