Jumping/No Speedo

My speedometer has been jumping around for a while. I'm not sure if its a wiring issue or if the speedo itself is messed up. Does anymoe know what kind of signal the speedo gets? Pulsed, voltage, resistance, ect? I have an oscilloscope and serveral volt and ohm meters to test with. I'm suspecting the speedo itself because I can give it a hit, and it'll start working for a few seconds. But using a tester from the connector in the left of the center console to the connector at the gauges, the wire was always connectd no matter how i shook it...
