The indie told me that there was no problem starting the car with the cam sensor disengaged. So I drove the car to his shop, and he was able to dig out the broken piece of the old sensor from the plug, and put the plug into the new sensor. So all is taken care of. I wonder what the cam sensor actually does. Something about variable valve timing I think, but it didn't seem to make any difference at all driving the car with the sensor disengaged.
