Yes, the torque convertor should not be bolted to the flywheel flexplate till the trans is bolted to the engine assy. If I'm following you, you bolted the convertor in and then put the trans around it. That absolutely won't work. The convertor needs to be engaged into the front pump and it is a sensitive operation when you have real feel. Turning the output flange has absolutely nothing to do with this.

When its in fill the trans and the torque convertor will fill when the engine runs. The fluid level is eventually adjusted with the engine running.
