I actually once did the same thing on a Chrysler with peeling clear. After removing as much loose clear as possible, I gently sanded the remaining clear and washed it with wax and grease remover before shooting a few layers of rattle can clear on it. A month later, I sanded and buffed the fresh clear to a smooth finish.

Oddly, I was saying the entire time that it wasn't worth the effort, because the car should have been properly resprayed, but the girlfriend at the time still wanted me to try. Three years later, the paint still looked good, though the DupliColor clear tended to haze a bit more readily than the vertical surfaces of the car, which still had factory clear on them.
