The G/F & I are planning to visit relatives in NO VA inthe fall, and I'd like to try and see that too. We'll be in Reston, so it's very close.
She's never been to DC and after the usual MALL suspects...Linc, Wash, Nat'l Gallery. Congress, Smithsonian, etc., where else would you suggest.

The new A&S museum is outstanding. If you love air planes and aviation, you'll get all you can stand there. You can either drive there (the museum is free, parking is $12) or you can get on a shuttle bus at the A&S Museum down on the Mall to go out there. It'd be easy to get ther from Reston, though.
I wouldn't give you two cents for the White House tour. You stand in line for a couple of hours only to be rushed through a few rooms in ten or fifteen minutes.
I hope you have a great time. There's a lot of fun stuff to do here and much of it is free.
