Thickheaded american car mechanics take out the thermostat because they know better than the engineers.
Put a thermostat in.
BTW, if the thermostat has a little BB on it (I don't think yours will), be sure to put that facing up and rotated such that it's at the highest point it can be.
Hopefully, the belt broke because it was old, and not because you need a new water pump or alternator.
