Both engines are mated to an auto trans, so the pilot bearing area should be the same. The flywheel for the auto trans is supposed to be the same for all 615, 616, and 617 engines; the flywheel for the 617 manual trans is heavier (width is 90mm) than the 615 & 616 (74mm width) according to the M-B manual.
Are you aware if the UK/Euro Bosch early IP had the same problem as the Am. Bosch 617 IP? I have come across some info about the copper sealing ring leaking for the individual injection pump element causing problems - the IP tries to create two columns at once. Seems M-B had to redesign the copper sealing ring two times before fixing the problem.
