Not to top the story, but with a 73 VW type 2, I was launching a 16' boat with the vehicle in gear. As I operated the winch, I got hit in the rear with the bus's bumper as it popped out of gear and I launched the boat, motor, trailer, and bus. I stopped it by getting to the brake pedal as the water was to the top of the carbs. Took 1 1/2 hours to pull plugs, dry dist. & cap. Alot of CRC spray and drove home. I'd say you were lucky too be able to stop it when you did, coulda been worse.  .. Yes, that CRC is good stuff.
