It wasn't stupid, it was cheap. Of course 99.99999999999999999% of us here are cheap and would have done the same thing. I think its possible to take the turbo off without removing the manifolds(it is on my California emissions car).

I suppose it could also be a leak in the EGR hose. That would rob the turbine of power and hence there would be no boost.

Edit: Any leak is a bad leak if its anywhere in the path between the compressor and the turbine of the turbo.
