I recently purchased a 1994 S320, knowing that the A/c was not cooling. Fortunately, the dealer was rather desperate to unload the car, and the price built in room to replace the evap.

Or at least I thought so.

My local indy (Philips on Two Notch Rd.) just quoted me $4300 to replace the evaporator, plus $650 for a duovalve.

I know this is an extremely involved repair, but the $4300 seems really excessive. I thought that was what an actual dealer would charge me.

Do I have unreasonable expectations to be able to get this done for more like $2500?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good shop anywhere relatively near Columbia, SC?
