I think the best idea I've read on this thread is your own...when you suggested using two smaller speakers in the factory opening, in place of the one. Get the highest quality, highest wattage 2 1/4", 3", whatever, that you can get your hands on, and a piece of thin flexible plastic, or fiberboard, or similar easily workable material, and make a plate to fit the factory opening, with two holes for the new speakers. If you want to get real creative, you can find a way to angle them slightly left and right, to maximize the stereo field.
