Sounds like you need new gaskets and crush rings for the valve covers, and a careful torquing - I think it's 10 nm. The slight compression of the gasket is what provides the seal. I would take it back to the mechanic and shame him into fixing it - pretty shabby to let a car go out like that.

As to the smoke out the pipe, it soundsl like valve seals or guides. I would guess that if you had a badly worn cam lobe or lobes, some of the valves are now getting moved where they weren't before, and that may be causing some oil to get past the seals and guides.
