"bad one"? No. Just the original design which is more prone to cracking than the later one. I have two cars with the #14 head, neither with a problem as they've been maintained properly (not overheated).
Further, there is no way to ensure that there is no crack without removing the head, you can use some rudimentary tests to see if there is a severe enough crack to pass combustion gasses into the coolant however.
