Not sure of the name or function of the ceramic connector near what you may be refering to. But the resistor group (in my '84 SEC) is a metel box with a swiss cheese appearance. Inside the box are a series of coils. These are the resistors. Heat is produced by these resistors depending on the blower motor speed. Alot of heat. I caution you to keep this area free of all debris. Could cause a fire. Dry leaves, pine needles, etc. will collect here over time. I found out the hard way. I ended up replacing the resistor group and blower motor too. Fortunately for me I had the hood up, idling the car with the blower on when the fire started. Dry leaves.

The smoke you see may be a warning. Use a flash light, a long handle screw driver to move things around and a good shop vac with a narrow snout attachment to clean real good.
