new to MB and Diesel have questions

hey there folks Aaron here in NC i recently bought me a 240d with 73k on the busted odometer the milage is not too far off as the car sat for2 years and the state inspection from 3 years ago stated a 67k on the odometer.
paid 2500 for it. runs great had a poor repaint but i bought it as a bio diesel guinea pig. well now i am hooked.

found a 300d a 1984 with 174k the same guy has it im carfaxed it he is the second owner but he is an old country guy who never knew these things needed valve adjusments and the usual PM upkeep. i have not heard it run yet but i am considering buying it for 2500 dollars. interior is about a 7.5 out of 10 the wood work has a few small issues. no tears in the seat and the dash has a few small cracks up by the defrost vents the bad thing is all the oil in the engine compartment. sounds like a blow by issue any advise ? what should i be leary of? i have been turning wrenches my whole life som preventive maintenace doesnt scare me. but major engine overhauls are not my cup of tea.

aslo i can hear the timing chain in my 240d 616 should one be able to hear the chain? it sounds like a chain. its not loud but to my ears i hear it.

this guy had a body shop and towing biz he bought and sold all sorts of cars but the MB's were his personal cars. he has no less than a 6 more w123 bodies i am going to make an offer on all. so some of these things have salvage titles . he has a nice euro spec (USA head lamps) that was rear ended at 96k mint save for the big dent in the back. nice euro interior everything is written in german . any way thanks in advanced for any opinions, advise.
