Yes, 722.118 is a diesel transmission. IIRC, it is a 240D or non-turbo 300D tranny- 4 bolt.

That hole- not sure. The speedo cable should be on the left. The bowden cable or the lever would be more in the middle of that side. I am thinking it may be the return line from the radiator (?) Don't you have one of these to match up? What is your car? It would be helpful to add your car to your sig so we know.
