The volvo diesel of the eighties used a six cylinder vw diesel with a four speed and overdrive stick tranny. That would be a very rugged tranny. Maybe the later diesel will bolt to it too. I am sure the eighties four cylinder deisel would bolt to it too.

I don't know from experience but am conjecturing.

Really though you should keep the tr stock and get a cheap diesel to tool around in.
