Question SOFT ride on an auto-level suspension

The car is a 1998 E320 wagon (56,000 mi) with a harsh ride in the rear. I initially thought the system might be too hard, but I've been told by a reliable mechanic that it acts like the struts are too soft. The car levels a load OK and is easy to bounce up and down since I changed out the nitrogen accumulators.

Does anyone have any experiance with a faulty suspension control valve (the valve the does the fluid metering to control the ride height)? If the check valve is faulty in this unit, will it lower basic system pressure and soften the ride?? It makes sense to me but I can't find anything on system trouble shooting.
