I did not drive it more than 15 miles and hour, so I don't know if it shifts at higher speeds. Anyone have any ideas as to possible cause or possible remedy?

Contrats on the purchase! I used to own the same car, and one day my wife was driving home from the mall and it wouldn't shift out of 1st. It turned out to be a vacuum connection at a Y connector near the rear top of the engine. Make sure you check all of the vacuum connections, including the Vacuum Modulator on the driver's side of the transmission.
Also, you should post this in the Diesel section...you'll probably get quicker replies.
