I believe someone has done it with the engine lifted in the body of the car but when I tried I ended up pulling the engine. Most of the bolts go into the block so unless you can weld a thin bolt to the remaining stud to get it out you will have to get the timing cover off!

The good news is that it's not like the engine is really that hard to pull. Esspecially since I can assume the radiator is out. The job then becomes a liesurly job and you can do so much more like clean and touch up the engine bay reaseal the engine. etc.
