Yes, lift it high. Pull slowly and carefully on the hoist until you can lower the load.

Since you have to pull uphill, you will need to use a come-a-long or similar. It's a two-man job with a big block on level ground with no puller, but it should be easy enough for one man to pull and the other to steer the hoist.

The key is to stay out of the way when you're moving the hoist. I've R&R'd dozens of engines this way (but only on level ground).
