You should be able to reach up behind the panel and push the switch out, without removing the panel. It can also be done from the front with a small flat blade knife, like an exacto, levering gently on the top and bottom of the switch, but you do risk chipping the wood getting it started. The plug/wires should come out far enough to re-attach to the new switch, again with the panel still in.
I don't have the same wood panel as your car, but it looks like the one in my 560SL.
