As most of you probably know by now, I am not a weepy-eyed liberal. I have spent most of my adult life campaingning on behalf of Republican leaders and Republican ideals.
I have not abandoned my Republican ideals, but looking at the current crop of Republican leaders I am sorely disappointed at what the GOP has to offer. None of the current leaders can inspire me in the ways that Reagan or (yes!) Richard Nixon inspired me. (Hate him or love him, Nixon was a far better President than recent history judges him, only his paranoia got on the way of greatness).
The Democratic party's platform leaves me cold. Their big spending ways in support of all kinds of wacky social programs is anathema to all that I believe in. So I would be hard put to cross party lines to vote for a Democrat.
But this year there is something different in the political air. His name is Obama.
For reasons that I cannot quite explain he inspires me. Even tough we belong to different political parties, his vision for America is one that I can follow and belive in.
Watching that bloated, self-serving pervert (aka Bubba) go after Obama with such viciousness and vitriol, while the shrill, estrogen-challenged candidate (aka Billary) keeps selling her old, stale goods makes me just want to puke. And it wants me to desperately want Obama to not just win the Dem nomination, but also the general election--and not just because of my deep antipathy for anything even closely related to the Clintons (whicha dmittedly runs pretty deep).
No, my reasons for wanting an Obama victory in November run deeper than that. I am not politically naive and I think that I am a good judge of character. I believe that Obama has the character and the vision to lead this country over the next several years.
After reading Caroline Kennedy's reasons for supporting Obama, I think that she has nailed the issue (except for the Iraq war thing) right on the head.
