I located the "primer pump" and pumped it exactly 100 times. I forget who said it, but that is a bear of a device, not user friendly. It leaked a fair amount of fuel while priming, but there is no sign of any leakage once screwed down.

It sounds like you have the old white type of primer pump. You should replace it with the updated black type of pump when you can. The old leaky white type can allow air to enter the fuel system and cause hard starts and poor running.
