Turns out my odometer is reading about 3% too high - after 100 GPS miles the trip meter read 103.
Using mileage from the GPS, we got 16.5 MPG on the highway.
not as good as I thought. This was however with a stiff head wind, loaded up, and 80 MPH.
edit: On the way home, again with a stiff head wind, got 17 MPG.
