Question Must I disconnect SLS to remove R. springs?

Hi, all,
Do I need to disconnect/remove the SLS stuff to remove and replace the rear springs on my 1979 300TD? My mechanic friend says yes, and is planning to charge me for extra hours to do it; after reading my Haynes manual, and looking at it myself long and hard, I must say it looks to me as though the spring will lower from around the SLS shock, without having to disconnect it. What do you think? Thanks, Dave
