The Granada was supposed to LOOK like a $20K Mercedes, not drive like one. I think it was named for the southern Spanish province for which the island (pronounced Greneda, not Granada was named, For $80 or so more, you could buy a Mercury Meteor.

I hear a Granada would outdrag a 240D...

It wasn't so much an ugly car as a Mercedified version of the Maverick. Like most Fords, it enjoyed combining with the atmosphere.
