Well I ran the 300SD for 100K on synthetic and the engine was real clean inside. I would say that for removing sludge and gunk go with Syn. There is also the ablility to extend oil change intervals, but I did not do that.

One more thing is easier starts in colder weather with the 5W40 Vs 15W40 I noticed a big difference in starting ability when I went from dino Rotella 15W40 to synthetic 5W40.

Just some reasons...

Only reason why not to switch is the added cost, but I had figured it was cheaper than rebuilding the engine.
